South Africa

Destination

South Africa

The ideal gateway to overlanding — from iconic parks to mountain deserts and wild coasts.

South Africa offers an extraordinary range of overland experiences with some of the region's strongest road and tourism infrastructure. It can be the starting point for a first overland adventure, the final chapter of a longer cross-border expedition, or a destination in its own right.

The strength of South Africa lies in its diversity. A single journey can combine big-game country, mountain passes, cultural heritage, semi-desert, remote 4x4 trails and dramatic coastline — with enough infrastructure to make longer road-based travel practical.

Highlights

South Africa highlights

Places that make sense as part of an overland route — not a checklist, but a set of anchors to build a journey around.

Kruger National ParkWildlife

Kruger National Park

Kruger is one of Africa's great self-drive safari destinations, with a large road network, established camps and wildlife ranging from the Big Five to exceptional birdlife. For overlanders, it can be experienced through conventional self-drive routes or, for a deeper wilderness feel, through selected 4x4 eco-trails led through less-travelled parts of the park.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier ParkKalahari

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

The Kgalagadi is where South African and Botswana wilderness meet. Red dunes, dry riverbeds, big skies and desert-adapted wildlife create a distinctive route, with specialist 4x4 trails extending beyond the main camp network. It is ideal for travellers who value space, solitude and slow wildlife watching.

Mapungubwe National ParkHeritage + Borders

Mapungubwe National Park

At the meeting point of South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, Mapungubwe combines baobab-dotted landscapes, wildlife and the story of an ancient African kingdom. High-clearance or 4x4 vehicles open more of the park, while the confluence viewpoint gives overlanders a literal view into a three-country journey.

|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

A true 4x4 destination in South Africa's far north-west, the Richtersveld is a stark mountain desert of rough tracks, deep sandy riverbeds, extreme temperatures and remarkable succulent diversity. It is for travellers who enjoy self-sufficiency, remote camps and landscapes that feel completely unlike the traditional safari image of Africa.

DrakensbergMountains

Drakensberg

The Drakensberg adds altitude, hiking, rock art and dramatic mountain scenery to an overland route. It is a natural counterpoint to the lowveld and bush, and a valuable place to explore the cultural and environmental history of Southern Africa beyond the game reserves.

Wild CoastCoast + Culture

Wild Coast

The Eastern Cape's Wild Coast is a landscape of cliffs, forests, rolling hills, rural villages and secluded beaches. It suits travellers who enjoy back roads, hiking, community-based experiences and coastal scenery. There are 4x4 routes in the region, while sensitive beach ecosystems remain off-limits to vehicle driving.

Panorama Route & LowveldScenic Route

Panorama Route & Lowveld

Blyde River Canyon viewpoints, mountain passes, waterfalls and escarpment scenery make the Panorama Route a natural scenic approach to Kruger. It works particularly well as a transition between road-trip exploration and wilderness safari.

The overland character

South Africa allows an itinerary to shift easily between comfortable touring and genuine off-grid travel. Main routes are generally straightforward, while selected national parks, mountain passes and wilderness areas provide technical or remote 4x4 sections for those who want them. This flexibility makes South Africa especially useful for mixed-experience groups.

When to travel

Northern wildlife regions

The drier winter months are generally excellent for game viewing, with mild days and cooler nights.

Summer

Greener bushveld, migrant birds and dramatic thunderstorms in the north-east, while some unsealed routes can be affected by rain.

Cape & western regions

Different seasonal patterns apply, so a cross-country overland itinerary should be designed around the regions being visited rather than one national “best time”.

South Africa is where overlanding can be as accessible or as adventurous as you want it to be. Self-drive through Kruger, cross the red dunes of the Kgalagadi, follow 4x4 tracks into the Richtersveld, explore an ancient kingdom at Mapungubwe or trade the bush for mountains and the Wild Coast. Few countries offer this much variety from behind the wheel.
