Overlanding

There is something different about arriving by road.

You see the landscape change, feel the distance between places and understand how the pieces fit together. Ikigai Tours turns the road into part of the experience.

Overlanding is not simply a way of getting from one destination to the next. It is a way of experiencing the spaces in between: the changing landscapes, remote tracks, small towns, wildlife corridors, campfire conversations and unexpected encounters that become part of the journey.

At Ikigai Tours, we use overland travel to create meaningful, educational and specialised journeys through Southern Africa. Our itineraries are designed to slow the experience down, connect travellers with the places they move through, and create a deeper understanding of wildlife, conservation, culture and landscape.

生き甲斐 · Our philosophy

Purpose in the route, presence in the moment

Ikigai gives the journey purpose. Ichigo Ichie reminds us to value every moment along the way.

Ikigai

Travel with purpose

Our journeys are curated around more than a checklist of attractions. We build routes that create context: why a protected area matters, how ecosystems connect across borders, how communities live alongside wildlife, and why responsible tourism can help protect these places.

Ichigo Ichie

Be present in the journey

Inspired by Ichigo Ichie — “one time, one meeting” — we value the moments that cannot be repeated: a lion call beyond an unfenced camp, a first view across a salt pan, a sunrise on the Zambezi, or a conversation that changes how you see a place.

Where we travel

Three countries, one connected landscape

Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa — each with a different overland character, and all of them stronger when you travel between them by road.

What's in a journey

What an Ikigai overland journey can include

Loading the roof rack before a remote leg
  • 01

4x4 travel through national parks, wilderness areas and scenic back-country routes.

  • 02

A mix of remote camping, established campsites, lodges and character-filled local stays, depending on the itinerary.

  • 03

Wildlife viewing, birding, guided walks, river experiences, heritage sites and specialist conservation encounters.

  • 04

Educational interpretation that adds context to the landscapes, wildlife and communities encountered en route.

  • 05

Thoughtful route planning around seasonal conditions, distances, fuel, water, park access and border logistics.

  • 06

Responsible travel practices that prioritise low-impact camping, ethical wildlife encounters and support for local communities and conservation initiatives.

Responsible overlanding

The places we travel through are not backdrops

They are living ecosystems, cultural landscapes and home to communities whose future is directly connected to how tourism develops.

Travel lightly

Stay on designated tracks, minimise unnecessary disturbance, manage waste responsibly and leave campsites as we found them.

Respect wildlife

Observe without crowding, feeding or altering animal behaviour. Wilderness encounters are most meaningful when the animals remain wild.

Use water and fire responsibly

Remote areas often have limited resources. Water use, firewood, campfires and waste disposal should follow local park rules and environmental conditions.

Support local

Where possible, use local guides, community initiatives, independent suppliers and locally owned tourism businesses so that travel value stays in the places visited.

Learn as we travel

Build interpretation into the journey: ecology, animal behaviour, conservation challenges, history, culture and the relationships between protected areas.

Protect the next journey

Conservation fees, responsible behaviour and traveller awareness all contribute to keeping these landscapes viable for wildlife, communities and future visitors.
